RV Awning Repair Tape
... Don't let a small tear ruin your shade
A small tear, pinhole, or puncture in your RV awning doesn't mean you need to replace the entire fabric right away. High-quality RV awning repair tape is an inexpensive, durable, and weather-resistant solution that can extend the life of your awning by years.
Unlike standard duct tape, which breaks down quickly under UV rays and leaves a sticky mess, specialized awning tape is clear, highly aggressive, and designed to withstand harsh outdoor elements and constant rolling.
Preparation is the Key to Success
The biggest mistake RVers make when patching an awning is failing to properly prep the surface. If the fabric is dirty, oily, or wet, the tape will simply peel off the first time you roll it up.
- Clean the Area: Wash the area around the tear thoroughly with mild soap and water to remove dirt and debris.
- Degrease: Wipe the area down with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) to remove any lingering tree sap, oils, or residue.
- Let it Dry: Ensure the fabric is 100% bone dry before attempting to apply the patch.
Applying the Tape
For the best results, you should apply the repair tape to both the top and bottom sides of the awning fabric if the tear goes all the way through.
- Trim the Tape: Cut a piece of tape large enough to extend at least 1 to 2 inches past the tear in all directions.
- Round the Corners: Use scissors to round off the four corners of your tape patch. Square corners are notorious for catching and peeling when the awning is rolled up.
- Apply Flat: Lay the awning on a flat, solid surface if possible (or have a helper hold a smooth backing board underneath). Peel the backing off the tape and apply it carefully to avoid trapping air bubbles.
- Apply Pressure: The adhesive is pressure-sensitive. Use a hard seam roller, or the smooth rounded handle of a screwdriver, to firmly burnish the tape into the texture of the fabric.
Recommended Awning Repair Tape
For permanent, waterproof repairs that hold up to UV exposure and constant rolling without peeling, we highly recommend heavy-duty clear awning tape.
